CSL Behring’s critical care therapies
encompass a range of life-saving
treatments, with particular emphasis on
vital wound-healing agents and on treating
clotting disorders in various settings.
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare, chronic, genetic disease. Left untreated, it can cause severe -- even life threatening -- and rapid swelling attacks as often as several times each month. CSL Behring produces a C1-INH concentrate, a plasma-derived therapy, containing the C1 protein that is missing or defective in patients with HAE, to help them manage the disease.
We offer Prothrombin Complex Concentrate (PCC) that helps to control bleeding arising from congenital or acquired deficiency of clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X—all of which are vital for effective blood clotting. Fibrinogen (Factor I) concentrate replaces a major protein involved in clot formation and helps control bleeding in patients with extensive blood loss. Factor XIII concentrate replaces the missing or deficient factor XIII in congenital and acquired bleeding disorders.
Other products are used for coagulation disorders in the shock and trauma setting. Our antithrombin concentrate is used to treat excessive systemic coagulation arising from sepsis (formerly called blood poisoning), trauma, or gynecological complications. Streptokinase is a thrombolytic therapy used for treatment of acute myocardial infarction to dissolve clots.
Our wound-healing agents, or
fibrin sealants , are used to expedite healing
and to seal cut tissues, control bleeding,
and permit uncomplicated healing
during surgery.
The role of fibrin sealants mimics the
final step in the coagulation cascade. Applied to a wound during surgery, fibrin sealants speed the clotting process and provide added hemostatic stability when used with sutures in surgery or endoscopy.
Our critical care therapies also include albumin to stabilize blood pressure in shock or sepsis patients who are albumin deficient. Albumin is also used to treat burn patients, augment fluid replacement therapy in cardiac surgery, and treat certain liver disorders. Human Serum Albumin is also used in multiple areas of therapeutic development and production as an
excipient due to its presence as a natural protein in the human body.
